A Busy Day for Birds

Hoorah for Birds! (US)

Author and Illustrator: Lucy Cousins
Publisher: Walker Books (UK), Candlewick Press (US)
Target audience: 2+
Format: Board book, Paperback (34 pages)

I really love this book, and so does my son. Yes, I know it isn't totally perfect, as the words are around the pictures on some pages, and others are a little too busy. However, it's still one of the better books out there for CVIs, with the text also helping make up for any shortfall in the illustrations. The rhyme is lively and funny, with lots of actions to act out together. It's also very sweet, with the busy bird still having time for a cuddle with mum, as the book winds down to a nice calm ending.

If this book is also a hit with your child, then the following are suggestions for some modifications that might help:

  • Using a piece of black card to cover the opposite page to the one the child is currently viewing. This works well for most pages in the book. I've actually taped in some additional plain black pages to serve this purpose as I wanted to make sure grandparents etc get it right when they read to him, without me having to give them any instructions.

  • There is one double page spread in particular (“Open your beak and sing!”- see images below), where either painting out the background or using cut outs in felt or card etc. are rather called for.

  • Whilst the images are bright and appealing, they are rather pop arty, so would benefit from being attacked by a permanent black marker in order to make their outlines more definite.
