Off to the Park!

Author: Child's Play/Bookstart
Illustrator: Stephen Cheetham
Publisher: Child's Play
Target audience: Mixed ages (with a visual impairment)
Format: Board book (10 pages)

Come with us to the park! Which way shall we go? What shall we do? What will we find?

An interactive, tactile book, developed for children with visual impairments by a collaboration between the charity BookTrust and the publisher Child's Play.

Particularly attractive parts of this book are the large shiny, red, squidgy ball and the silver reflective slide. The rhyming text is action packed, attempting to paint a multi-sensory image in the child's head of what's going on.

The result, however, is kind of abstract. My two-year old is attracted to both the sound of the text and the images, but he clearly has no clue what it's all about! For younger children, therefore, you'll probably need to supplement a straight reading of this book by also talking about the pictures in language appropriate to their own experience.

Available in the same series are 'Off to the Beach!' and 'Getting Ready!'. We've just received 'Getting Ready!' in our BookTouch pack, so expect a review soon!
